Lecture Title: The Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO): Where Academics Join Service Providers in the Fight Against Poverty

Keynote Speaker: William N. Evans, Ph.D., Keough-Hesburgh Professor of Economics & Co-Founder of LEO

The Notre Dame Club of the Black Hills and the Uplifting Parents Program are co-hosting this free event. Any member of the local community is welcome to register and reserve a seat.

The Hesburgh Lecture Series has brought Notre Dame faculty to alumni clubs and their local communities since 1986. Uplifting Parents is an innovative local program created in 2014 by Catholic Social Services with help from a coalition of about 20 non-profit agencies in Rapid City. It seeks to empower lower-income single parents by assisting them to acquire the education needed to fill a skilled job, earn a livable wage, and get their families out of poverty. This year’s speaker not only runs an impressive research lab at Notre Dame, he is also working locally with Uplifting Parents with the support of a large $1.4 million grant from the John. T. Vucurevich Foundation. We are thrilled to showcase the LEO approach to poverty alleviation and this particular local partnership.
